Collecting Sample:
Go to lab and
Turn on A1c machine if necessary
Self-Test will take up to 5 minutes
Power button on top of machine – towards back of device
Or wake up the far right machine
- Click on red top button
- Click red patient icon
- Enter patient’s chart number
- Click return button
- Patient’s chart number should pop up in the top left corner of the screen
Get A1c cartridge to collect blood sample
- In a black basket in the lab, in a plastic wrap.
- Extras are in the fridge – must be room temp before using them
- Keep 3 in basket at all times
- Let OM know it is time to order more when the last box is opened
- Remind OM when there are only 6 remaining in the fridge
- make sure they are standing upright
- PUT ON GLOVES
- Open the corner cap just slightly
- Ask the patient which finger they prefer to use
- Wipe off tip of finger with an alcohol wipe
- Allow finger to dry about 5 seconds
- Patient can shake finger to dry faster
- Twist and pull the safety tab on the lancet
- Place lancet with needle end against the side of the finger
- Do not place need in center of finger due to sensitive in that area
- Squeeze finger to get blood started
- Wipe first drop away with cotton ball
- Squeeze finger to get enough blood
- Use clear cartridge corner piece with small capillary tube to take up a small amount of blood
- Put back in a1c cartridge
- Give the patient a cotton ball to hold against finger prick
- Take to the lab immediately
- Insert cartridge into machine
- Barcode facing left
- Close the lid on A1c machine
- Machine will take 3-5 minutes to result
- Make note of result number to enter into chart
- Click checkmark
- Remove Cartridge
- Put cartridge and lancet in biowaste container
- Turn off machine at the end of day
