Collecting Sample:

Go to lab and

Turn on A1c machine if necessary
Self-Test will take up to 5 minutes

Power button on top of machine – towards back of device

Or wake up the far right machine

  • Click on red top button
  • Click red patient icon
  • Enter patient’s chart number
  • Click return button
  • Patient’s chart number should pop up in the top left corner of the screen

Get A1c cartridge to collect blood sample

  • In a black basket in the lab, in a plastic wrap.
    • Extras are in the fridge – must be room temp before using them
    • Keep 3 in basket at all times
      • Let OM know it is time to order more when the last box is opened
      1. Remind OM when there are only 6 remaining in the fridge
    1. make sure they are standing upright
  1. PUT ON GLOVES
  2. Open the corner cap just slightly
  3. Ask the patient which finger they prefer to use
  4. Wipe off tip of finger with an alcohol wipe
  5. Allow finger to dry about 5 seconds
    1. Patient can shake finger to dry faster
  6. Twist and pull the safety tab on the lancet
  7. Place lancet with needle end against the side of the finger
    1. Do not place need in center of finger due to sensitive in that area
  8. Squeeze finger to get blood started
  9. Wipe first drop away with cotton ball
  10. Squeeze finger to get enough blood
  11. Use clear cartridge corner piece with small capillary tube to take up a small amount of blood
    1. Put back in a1c cartridge 
  12. Give the patient a cotton ball to hold against finger prick
  13. Take to the lab immediately
  14. Insert cartridge into machine
    1. Barcode facing left
  15. Close the lid on A1c machine
  16. Machine will take 3-5 minutes to result
  17. Make note of result number to enter into chart
  18. Click checkmark
  19. Remove Cartridge
  20. Put cartridge and lancet in biowaste container
  21. Turn off machine at the end of day
